Lakenheath Warren was a Royal Flying Corps (RFC) airfield in WW1 and was used as a bombing and ground-attack range for aircraft operating from other airfields. 56th/57th Rescue Squadrons - HH-60G Pave Hawk.495th FS (Valkyries) - F-35A Lightning II.494th FS (Panthers) - F-15E Strike Eagle.492nd FS (Madhatters) - F-15E Strike Eagle.494th Fighter Squadron (FS) will gradually replace its F-15C/D Eagles with F-35A Lighting II aircraft. The first F-35 Lightnings arrived on the 15th December 2021. The 48th Fighter Wing have announced that 495th Fighter Squadron (a former F-111 Sqn) are to be reactivated as an F-35A Lightning II unit (the Valkyries) at RAF Lakenheath. To accommodate the new aircraft an F-35 Campus has been constructed on the south side of the airfield. RAF Lakenheath is expected to station two F-35A Lightning II squadrons, totalling 48 jets, which will be added to the 48th Fighter Wing's existing two F-15E Strike Eagle Squadrons, in late 2021. The 48th Operations Support Squadron provides flight and airfield management, operational plans, scheduling, intelligence, life support, air traffic control, weapons and tactics, weather, training, group administration, and 48th Fighter Wing battle staff manning. The F-15D Eagle is a two-seat training version. The F-15C Eagle is an all-weather single-seat tactical fighter designed for air supremacy in aerial combat. Eagle variants by darker aircraft camouflage and conformal fuel tanks mounted along the engine intake ramps.

The F-15E Strike Eagle is an all-weather multirole two-seat strike fighter. 495th Fighter Squadron will equip with the F-35A Lightning II at the end of 2021 and the 493rd Fighter Squadron are expected to replace their F-15C/D Eagles with the F-35A Lightning II in 2022. RAF Lakenheath is home to the United States Air Force (USAF) 48th Fighter Wing (Liberty Wing) which consists of 492d Fighter Squadron with the F-15E Strike Eagle, 493d Fighter Squadron with the F-15C/D Eagle, and 494th Fighter Squadron with the F-15E Strike Eagle.
